TITLE RESOLUTION DESIGNATING THE FLORIDA COLLECTION OF THE MIAMI-DADE PUBLIC LIBRARY SYSTEM THE ''HELEN MUIR FLORIDA COLLECTION'' AND DIRECTING THE COUNTY MANAGER TO PROVIDE A PLAQUE OR OTHER APPROPRIATE SIGNAGE AT THE COLLECTION COMMEMORATING HELEN MUIR AND REFLECTING THE COLLECTION�S NEW DESIGNATION BODY WHEREAS, Helen Muir's active interest in libraries began when she joined the Coconut Grove Library Association and in 1955 was elected its president. At that time, the Coconut Grove Library was a private subscription library, and it was through her efforts that the Coconut Grove Library joined the Miami Public Library System in 1957; and WHEREAS, in 1961 Helen Muir began a campaign, which resulted in the construction of a new Coconut Grove Library building and ten years later she took on the campaign of creating a united City and County Library System, thus giving birth to the Miami-Dade Public Library System; and WHEREAS, in 1971 Helen Muir was appointed to the Miami-Dade Public Library System�s Advisory Board and served on the Board until 1999; and WHEREAS, in 1972 Helen Muir campaigned tirelessly once again to pass the Decade of Progress Bond Issue, which set aside $34.7 million for the construction of twelve libraries including three Regional Libraries and a new Main Library; and WHEREAS, Helen Muir was a founding member of the Friends of the Miami-Dade Public Library, and served on the City of Miami's Library Advisory Board; and WHEREAS, in 1999 Helen Muir was named Chair Emeritus of the Miami-Dade Public Library System�s Advisory Board by the Board of County Commissioners; and WHEREAS, in 2000 the American Library Association named Helen Muir to the Library Trustees Association�s Advocates Honor Roll and her name is prominently displayed in the State Library of Florida; and WHEREAS, Helen's Muir's lifetime of service to Miami-Dade County and its libraries is immeasurable, the present Miami-Dade Public Library System being direct evidence of that service; and WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners wishes to recognize Helen Muir�s pioneering efforts, unparalleled advocacy and steadfast commitment to the Miami-Dade Public Library System; and WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners recognizes that Helen Muir has made a direct, significant lifetime contribution to Miami-Dade County as set forth in Section 2-1, Part 9, Rule 9.02(d) of the Code of Miami-Dade County, NOW BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board pursuant to its authority under Section 2-1, Part 9, Rule 9.02 of the Code of Miami-Dade County and by 3/5 vote of the Board members present hereby designates the Florida Collection of the Miami-Dade Public Library System as the �Helen Muir Florida Collection� and directs the County Manager to place the appropriate designation both commemorating Helen Muir and reflecting the collection�s new designation. |
