TITLE
RESOLUTION APPROVING CODESIGNATION OF FLAGLER STREET FROM SW 97TH AVENUE TO SW 107TH AVENUE AS LUISA GARCIA-TOLEDO BOULEVARD

BODY
WHEREAS, this Board has conducted a public hearing to consider codesignating Flagler Street from SW 97th Avenue to SW 107th Avenue as Luisa Garcia-Toledo Boulevard; and
WHEREAS, Luisa Garcia-Toledo one of the most outstanding representatives of the Cuban women in exile; and
WHEREAS, Luisa Garcia-Toledo a woman of untiring spirit of fight with the many causes from improvement of the community, and human rights in her native land of Cuba. Pioneered declarations of the Castro Regime�s torture of political prisoners in Cuba, before the Organization of American States (OAS) and before the United Nations� Human Rights Commission in Geneva, Switzerland; and
WHEREAS, Luisa Garcia-Toledo was a political prisoner in Topes de Collantes and

Santa Clara Prisons, for having participated in political uprising; and

WHEREAS, Luisa Garcia-Toledo was President of the National Association of Cuban-American Women (NACAW), Vice-Chairperson of the Spanish American League Against Discrimination (SALAD) and elected Honorary Chairperson by members of SALAD. Together with SALAD, became a force for the English Plus Movement, which resulted in Miami-Dade County�s Board of Commissioners passing a resolution legalizing the use of the Spanish language; and
WHEREAS, Luisa Garcia-Toledo was nominated to the State of Florida Hall of Fame in 2003; and
WHEREAS, Luisa Garcia-Toledo passed away February 27, 2008, and is survived by her husband Rafael Garcia-Toledo, and 3 children; and
WHEREAS, this Board would like to honor the memory of Luisa Garcia-Toledo with this codesignation; and
WHEREAS, this proposed codesignation is located in County Commission District 10,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that:
Section 1. This Board approves the codesignation of Flagler Street from SW 97th Avenue to SW 107th Avenue as Luisa Garcia-Toledo Street.
Section 2. The Clerk of the Board is hereby directed to transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the United States Postal Service, the Traffic Signals and Signs Division of the Public Works Department and Land Development Division of the Public Works Department, the Miami-Dade Police Department, and the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department.
