TITLE RESOLUTION DIRECTING THE MAYOR OR MAYOR�S DESIGNEE TO COLLABORATE WITH FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY, THE FLORIDA BOARD OF GOVERNORS, AND THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE TO CREATE A VETERINARY SCHOOL AT FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY BODY WHEREAS, the veterinary profession has greatly expanded its role, scope, and influence in medicine beyond preventing and addressing zoonotic diseases; and WHEREAS, veterinary medicine contributes to the advancement of human and public health by improving agriculture and food systems, advancing biomedical and comparative medical research, enhancing environmental and ecosystem health, and helping manage twenty-first century public health challenges; and WHEREAS, because the veterinary profession plays such a vital role in today�s society, it is important to create as many avenues and opportunities for its continued success and development; and WHEREAS, the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine is the State of Florida�s only veterinary college; and WHEREAS, a veterinary school should be established in the South Florida region; and WHEREAS, Florida International University would be a suitable institution to create a veterinary school in South Florida; and WHEREAS, Florida International University currently hosts South Florida�s only public law school and medical school, and has made great strides in both arenas; and WHEREAS, this Board would like the Mayor or Mayor�s designee to collaborate with Florida International University, the Florida Board of Governors, and the Florida Legislature to create a veterinary school at Florida International University, � NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board: Section 1. Directs the Mayor or Mayor�s designee to collaborate with Florida International University, the Florida Board of Governors, and the Florida Legislature to create a veterinary school at Florida International University. Section 2. Directs the Mayor or Mayor�s designee to provide a report to this Board detailing his collaborative efforts and plan to create a veterinary school at Florida International University within 60 days of the effective date of this resolution and place the completed report on an agenda of the Board pursuant to Ordinance No. 14-65. |
