TITLE RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING AND DIRECTING THE COUNTY MAYOR OR COUNTY MAYOR�S DESIGNEE TO ALLOW COUNTY EMPLOYEES TO DONATE ACCRUED ANNUAL AND HOLIDAY LEAVE TIME TO THE ONEORLANDO FUND FOR THE PURPOSE OF ASSISTING THE VICTIMS AND FAMILY MEMBERS OF THE RECENT PULSE NIGHTCLUB TERRORIST ATTACK; SETTING THE CAP OF SUCH DONATIONS AT $250,000.00; AND AUTHORIZING THE COUNTY MAYOR TO MAKE THE CONTRIBUTION ON BEHALF OF THE EMPLOYEES OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY BODY WHEREAS, on June 12, 2016, a lone gunman went on a shooting rampage in an Orlando nightclub leaving 49 people dead and 53 more wounded; and WHEREAS, the terrorist attack has been characterized as the worst mass shooting in American history; and WHEREAS, the violent act was particularly heartbreaking for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (�LGBTQ�) community as the venue in which the gunman opened fire was a popular gay nightclub in the Orlando community; and WHEREAS, several of the victims and their families have strong ties to the Miami-Dade County area and many generous County employees have expressed a desire to aid those affected most by the shooting; and WHEREAS, in response to the mass shooting at Pulse nightclub, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer announced the creation of the OneOrlando fund to help respond to local community needs; and WHEREAS, funds collected through the OneOrlando fund would go to nonprofit organizations serving victims and their families, Hispanic, LGBTQ, and faith groups; and WHEREAS, the OneOrlando fund has already raised over $5 million through donations from over 100,000 donors including the Walt Disney Company, Wells Fargo, JetBlue, AT&T, Comcast/NBA, and the Orlando Magic; and WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County stands in solidarity with the residents of Orlando and wishes to express support for our fellow Americans and Floridians during this challenging time; and WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County has previously adopted resolutions to assist other communities devastated by disasters, including communities in Texas, Louisiana, New Jersey, New York, and the Caribbean, e.g. Resolution Nos. R-1031-07, R-972-08, R-1103-08, R-01-10, R-977-12, and R-956-15; and WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners wishes to permit such donations of accrued leave time towards the recovery process for the victims and their family members impacted by the terrorist attack in Orlando, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board: Section 1. Hereby authorizes and directs the County Mayor or County Mayor�s designee to immediately allow the donation by County employees of accrued annual and holiday leave time to the OneOrlando fund for the purpose of assisting the victims and family members of the recent Pulse nightclub terrorist attack up to a limit of $250,000.00. Section 2. Directs the County Mayor or County Mayor�s designee to publicize and make available forms for employees to complete in order to authorize such accrued annual and holiday leave contributions. The authorization forms to be distributed by the County Mayor or County Mayor�s designee shall include a statement that the Board of County Commissioners has approved contributions of accrued annual and holiday leave time to the OneOrlando fund for the purpose of assisting victims and family members of the recent Pulse nightclub terrorist attack. Section 3. Authorizes and directs the County Mayor or County Mayor�s designee to provide said donation of the total value of County employee leave time contributions to the OneOrlando fund. |
