A MOMENT IN COUNTY HISTORY
On May 21, 2013, Chairwoman Sosa hosted the first Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners’ meeting outside of County Hall. The off-site meeting took place at the South Miami-Dade Culture Arts Center where residents had the opportunity to meet their elected officials. This was an initiative of Chairwoman Sosa in order to bring government closer to residents.

- File #130943 - Ordinance urging the Florida Department of Health, the Miami-Dade County Health Department, and the Florida Department of Elder Affairs to take necessary measures to ensure that establishments throughout Miami-Dade County that cook, prepare, and/or package food that is served to seniors, through adult nutrition service programs, are subject to frequent unannounced inspections and monitoring.
The ordinance will ensure that the services provided by these establishments are in accordance with Florida law, County ordinance, and minimum standards of hygiene. Chairwoman Sosa aims to continue protecting and promoting the health, safety, and general welfare of the elderly Miami-Dade County residents, many of which who rely on the adult nutrition service programs and are homebound, frail, or financially needy.

Chairwoman Sosa celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Miami-Dade Community Relations Board during its Golden Anniversary Luncheon at Miami-Dade College Wolfson Campus. The primary mission of the CRB is to prevent and reduce intergroup tensions and bring together diverse groups and interests to create a cohesive community where all people are valued and respected.
The Latin Builders Association celebrated “20 de Mayo” at the JW Marriot where Chairwoman Sosa joined Mayor Carlos Gimenez in presenting the Key to the County to Bertha Soler, leader of Cuba’s Las Damas de Blanco and winner of the Sakharov Prize.
Chairwoman Sosa joined CAMACOL in celebrating its 34th Hemispheric Congress at the Biltmore Hotel. For over 34 years, CAMACOL has been a pioneer in the international business sector through its Hemispheric Congress of Latin Chambers of Commerce and Industry, a program which is unique in that it has an established infrastructure comprised of the presidents of the national chambers of commerce throughout the Latin America and Caribbean region, as well as Spain.
Chairwoman Sosa joined Superintendent Alberto Carvahlo and Mr. Michael Rodriguez, general manager of Univision 23 WLTV, in honoring 10 teachers during Univision’s 11th annual “Un Maestro Especial” awards luncheon sponsored by Papa John’s and Nova Southeastern University.
SAVE DADE honored Chairwoman Sosa during its annual Champions of Equality reception at the Hilton Miami. The event was attended by more than 450 community, political, and civic leaders.
Governor Rick Scott and Chairwoman Sosa visited PortMiami as part of the Building Up Manufacturing Victory Tour, which celebrates the legislation just passed by the State of Florida Legislature eliminating sales tax on manufacturing equipment.
Chairwoman Sosa celebrated National Nurses Week, May 6-12, at Miami Children’s Hospital. Often described as an art and a science, nursing is a profession that embraces dedicated people with varied interests, strengths and passions because of the many opportunities the profession offers.
District 6 celebrated Mother’s Day in a grand way! Chairwoman Sosa visited several senior centers to greet residents and sing with Mariachis. The centers included: West Dade Adult Daycare, Miami Springs Senior Center, West Miami Senior Center, Residential Plaza, Badia and Hialeah Housing Authority.
Chairwoman Sosa attended the 8th annual Distinguished Community Service Award presented by the Miami-Dade Asian Advisory Board. She was recognized for her friendship and continuous support of the Board as well as being elected as the first Hispanic chairwoman of the Board of County Commissioner— an exemplary accomplishment for an immigrant and woman to achieve.
After 20 years, Chairwoman Sosa reunited with her former colleagues and students from Kendale Elementary School during a special ceremony to remove a time capsule that was buried under the school’s flagpole. The time capsule contained newspapers, celebrity posters, audio cassettes, and toys that were popular in the early 1990’s.
Kristi House hosted its 7th annual Breaking the Silence luncheon where Chairwoman Sosa and other elected officials showed their support for the organization. Since 1994, Kristi House is dedicated to respecting, protecting and healing the children and families.

Take the Train, Take the Test Thursday, June 27, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Metrorail Stations: Coconut Grove, Vizcaya, Allapattah, Earlington Heights, MLK, Northside, Brownsville and Hialeah The Miami-Dade County Health Department has partnered with Miami-Dade Transit and 3-1-1 to offer free HIV testing to the public at select Metrorail stations. BAN ON TEXTING-WHILE-DRIVING |

Chairwoman Sosa was at Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Senior High School to join Governor Rick Scott as he signed the ban on texting-while-driving in Florida starting October 1st. Since 2008, the chairwoman has sponsored legislation advocating this much needed law that will save many lives and prevent property damage.

MDX Public Hearing |
The Board of Directors for the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX) will be considering a toll rate change for SR 836/Dolphin Expressway. The MDX Board approved a toll rate for SR 836 of 70 cents per gantry at NW 97thAvenue, NW 57th Avenue and NW 17th Avenue in both eastbound and westbound directions. The Board is seeking public input on a potential lower rate of 60 cents for these locations. This change will impact the revenue that will be collected and the future projects that MDX can deliver in Miami-Dade County. MDX will conduct the following meetings to provide information to the public prior to this important decision. Homestead Blvd., Homestead, FL 33030 The Miami-Dade Public Library System and the Miami Dolphins Foundation are teaming up for the Summer Reading 2013 campaign! Come join the special kick-off celebration featuring magician Robert Hermens, caricature artist Al Rod and a visit from the Miami Dolphins’ cheerleaders. Summer Reading is divided into three age categories. To earn a grand prize ticket, children and teens are encouraged to read two or more hours each week, for adults the requirement is four hours. Girls Empowerment & Mentoring Camp June 10 - August 16, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Women’s Park 10251 Flagler Street, Miami, FL 33172 Recognizing that art has demonstrated itself to be a powerful tool of self-expression and esteem-building for adolescent girls, the Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department offers a fun and innovative summer arts camp program for girls ages 11 to 16. The GEM Camp includes a wide variety of arts-focused classes and workshops that incorporate the Women’s Park vision of preserving and promoting the contributions of women to the Miami-Dade community. The cost for the camp is $75/week, plus a one-time annual registration fee of $12 (includes early drop-off at 7:30 a.m. and late pick-up until 6 p.m.) Class space is limited. Redland Summer Fruit Festival June 15-16, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Fruit & Spice Park 24801 SW 187 Avenue, Homestead, FL 33031 The Redland Summer Fruit Festival will feature local agriculture and tropical-fruit plants on display and for sale. There will be educational workshops and demonstrations on various topics including lychee/longan, cultivation, propagation, and grafting techniques.
