In the Company of Women Awards

Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department, in partnership with the Miami-Dade Commission for Women and the Parks Foundation of Miami-Dade, announces the Call for Nominations for the 2025 In the Company of Women Awards, which is scheduled for March 13, 2025, at the Coral Gables Country Club.

The Call for Nominations deadline has been extended to Oct. 14 at 11:59 p.m. Nominations began on Sept. 3 and all women in Miami-Dade County who exemplify professional development, community responsibility, leadership and vision, contribute to women’s progress, and promote pluralism are eligible.

Nominations will be received in the following 12 categories:

Outstanding Woman in Arts and Entertainment
Outstanding Woman in Business and Economics
Outstanding Woman in Communications and Literature
Outstanding Woman in Education and Research
Outstanding Woman in Government and Law, Elected Official
Outstanding Woman in Government and Law, Other
Outstanding Woman in Health and Human Services
Outstanding Woman in Science and Technology
Outstanding Woman in Sports and Athletics
Outstanding Young Professional (must be age 40 and under)
Community Spirit Award
Mayor’s Pioneer Award

How to Nominate:

Complete the nomination form
Submit the following:
1. Nominee’s resume
2. Nominee’s 200-word biography
3. One high-resolution color photo of the nominee
4. No more than three supporting documents, including recommendation letters, newspaper or magazine articles, etc. If submitting recommendation letters, the letters must be from persons other than the nominator. For the Mayor’s Pioneer Award, please submit three recommendation letters and no more than two additional supporting documents.

Nomination packages must be completed by 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 14, 2024.

Nomination forms that fail to include the requested items and do not meet the application deadline will automatically be disqualified.

Past recipients of the In the Company of Women award are not eligible.

A committee of community leaders, including past In the Company of Women award recipients, will review nomination packages to select award recipients.

It’s time to honor an amazing woman – nominate her today.

The In the Company of Women Award, celebrates women, Women's History Month, and Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation & Open Spaces Department, the third largest parks system in the United States. Created in 1989 to promote community during a time when Miami-Dade County was experiencing significant transformations, the award was meant to bring our diverse community together. Local legends, Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Yvonne Santa Maria, Athalie Range, Elizabeth Virrick and Alice Wainwright received the Pioneer Award, and were recognized for the role they played in paving new paths for women. During that inaugural event, Ann Bishop, Cheryl Brownstein-Santiago, Gloria Estefan, Gill Freeman, Carrie Meek, Queen Chiku N'gozi, Sister Jeanne O'Laughlin, Maria Elvira Salazar, and Pam Saulsby became the first set of honorees because of their professional development, contribution to women's progress and service to the community.

Today, In the Company of Women continues the legacy of honoring Miami-Dade County's most amazing women. While we celebrate these leaders during the awards ceremony, we also highlight the work and contributions of The Women's Park – a Miami-Dade Park which was created to recognize and celebrate the contributions of women who helped to improve our community's quality of life. It is the first park in the nation of its kind. In the early 1990s, pioneer feminist Roxcy O'Neal Bolton created a coalition of women leaders, including former Superintendent of Miami-Dade Parks, Silvia M. Unzueta, to lead the charge. The park was created in June 1992 with the help from the late Stephen Clark, former Miami-Dade Mayor and with the support of the Board of County Commissioners. The Women's Park stands as a result of the dynamic interaction of these diverse community leaders.
