Registration is now open for "Animation Gets Real Miami 2020" virtual summer camp for teens with autism and related disabilities

Registration is now open for the “Animation Gets Real Miami 2020,” summer boot camp for teens and young adults with autism spectrum disorder and related disabilities.  Due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) public health emergency, the camp will be held via a Zoom virtual classroom and will explore the exciting world of animation and filmmaking as students learn real life skills, including animation; writing and editing; storyboarding; and iPad music making. The registration deadline is June 5, 2020, and can be completed at  miamidadearts.org/content/animation-gets-real-registration-form.

The following camp sessions are being offered this summer:

Session 1:  June 15 - 19, 2020 / Via Zoom

Session 2:  June 22 - 26, 2020 / Via Zoom

The camp program is appropriate for students ages 13-22 with autism spectrum disorder and related disabilities who can follow instructions, independently communicate, and participate in a virtual group setting. The non-refundable program fees are $50 per one-week session for Miami-Dade County residents and $300 per one-week session for non-residents.  Scholarships are available to Miami-Dade County residents who qualify for free or reduced lunch, or who receive assistance such as SNAP benefits.

Space is limited to 30 participants per session. Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Availability of sessions is subject to change based on student participation. Animation Gets Real Miami 2020 is presented by Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs All Kids Included in partnership with Arts4All Florida and Arts for Learning/Miami.

About the Instructors:

Dani Bowman, animator, author, and entrepreneur will impart her animation skills while exuding enthusiastic inspiration to students with disabilities.  Bowman has ASD, Asperger's Syndrome Disorder and has been teaching animation for 9 years since she founded her company Powerlight Studios in Los Angeles, CA.

Dr. Clint Randles, Assistant Professor of Music Education at University of South Florida and a VSA Florida teaching artist in the Tampa Bay area, teaches iPad music, an innovative musical art form that can be adapted to everyone.  Dr. Randles teaches pre-service music teachers, works with local school districts, and conducts research on the place of creativity in the music curriculum.

About Arts4all Florida:  A private not-for-profit organization, ARTS4ALL FLORIDA (formerly VSA FLORDA) conducts art education programs in schools, Department of Juvenile Justice facilities, and community centers; promotes the accomplishments of artists with disabilities through our artist registry, exhibitions, and performances; and increases access to the arts through professional development workshops.  VSA Florida is a member of the VSA Affiliate Network (a program of the John F.
