New World School of the Arts visual artists to enhance Metrorail Stations with their artwork

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
New World School of the Arts (NWSA) is partnering with Miami-Dade Transit (MDT) to give more than 25 students from the high school and college visual arts programs at NWSA the opportunity to give Metrorail stations a visually cutting-edge makeover. The project started at the Brickell Metrorail station on Sunday, November 18.

“The design concept is to make the viewer experience an artistic movement that comes right out of the concrete columns and structures, which are the natural settings in the stations,” said Maggy Cuesta, Dean of visual arts at NWSA. “The project, headed by Professor Aramis O’Reilly, gives our students the opportunity to explore their art in an architectural canvas which will challenge their artistic perspective due to the set boundaries, all with the objective of creating an appealing environment for the passengers. Miami-Dade Transit approached us with this wonderful opportunity which we agreed would be a win-win, not only for our students and the transit system, but also for our community.”

Phase 2 of the collaboration will consist of decorating various Metrorail stations with juried student work, including paintings, drawings, digital media and graphic design, to coincide with the Art Basel Miami Beach celebrations. These works will be enlarged and duplicated with the goal of extending the installations throughout the city.

“This partnership is a wonderful expansion of our Art en Route program that will further beautify our Metrorail stations while giving local young budding artists in our community an opportunity to exhibit their works,” MDT Director Harpal Kapoor said.

The busiest Metrorail station, Government Center, will exhibit a collection of large-format prints with the theme of “Sillas” (“Chairs”).   Developed by visual artist Mauricio Gonzalez, an NWSA sophomore, this unique series of drawings/paintings depicts the chair as an icon for human personification. To the viewer, this series will remove the chair from its static environment and will transform it into a work of art.

New World School of the Arts was created by the Florida Legislature as a center of excellence in the performing and visual arts and is an educational partnership of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Miami Dade College and the University of Florida.
