Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department asks residents to help reduce costly sewer clogs

(MIAMI, May 26, 2015) – The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) is asking Miami-Dade residents to help reduce and eliminate costly clogs within the County’s nearly 6,800 miles of sewer lines due to “flushable” wipes.

Out of sight doesn’t always mean out of mind. There is a growing national problem of wipes in pipes that result in increased sewer clogs, broken pumps and other large pieces of sewer machines and equipment. The culprit: pre-moistened towelettes, baby wipes, cleaning wipes, paper towels and feminine products.

These products do not breakdown within the sewer system and can result in costly clogs, as well as sewer backups in your home. Please be mindful of what is flushed down the toilet, the unseen damage can result in millions of dollars in repair work or replacement, not to mention possibly affecting service delivery.

It is recommended that only toilet paper be flushed down the toilet and all other products be disposed of in the trash.
