MIAMI – The Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board (HAAB) co-sponsored a Back to School Fair on Aug. 22, in partnership with Survivor's Pathway, the Florida Department of Health, the Farmworkers Association, as well as other organizations that came together to distribute school materials to families in South Dade. The pandemic greatly impacted the children of farmworker families and the fair was created to assist them.
More than 250 children received back to school materials, including back packs, school supplies, personal protective equipment, face masks, hand sanitizers, and bicycles. Hot meals were provided to the participating children and their families along with COVID-19 educational materials, and information. The event was held in South Dade at the Centro Campesino facilities.
The idea for a Back to School Fair is part of the HAAB COVID-19 Task Force response plan. The group has been meeting biweekly since May to strategize on different ways to help the Hispanic community in Miami-Dade County.
