Miami-Dade County Asian-American Advisory Board elects new officers


MIAMI – The Asian-American Advisory Board (AAAB), under the Office of Community Advocacy, a Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners division, elected its 2022-2023 officers during the last 2022 meeting.


Dr. Li Gurau, Chairwoman, appointed by District 9 Commissioner.
Dr. Gurau, Palmetto Bay resident, was elected Chairwoman for the second term. She was born in China and came to United States in 1990. She is a licensed professional engineer and has worked for Miami Dade County for more than 23 years. Dr. Gurau is actively engaged in promoting cultural advancement and understanding of the Asian culture and heritage, in addition to developing and encouraging Asian-American businesses in Miami-Dade to do business with the county and its municipalities.

Phonethip Tai Vaz
Phonethip Tai Vaz, First Vice-Chairwoman, appointed by District 5 Commissioner.
She is a long-time resident of Miami-Dade County, and a former restauranteur, currently working as the managing director of two corporations. Tai’s passion in promoting Asian culture, heritage, diversity, and inclusion led her to the position of executive director for the annual Asian Culture Festival at the Fruit and Spice Park with the Thai American Association of South Florida for the past three years. In addition, Tai is actively involved with philanthropic efforts to support various local, national, and worldwide charities devoted towards education and health awareness for the children around the world.

Luna Adachi
Luna Adachi, Second Vice-Chairman, appointed by District 5 Commissioner.
She was born and raised in Japan, moved to the United States after the Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995 in Kobe, Japan. She has a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. She is a founder of the Miami Japanese Language Meetup which has more than 2,000 members and has served at the Ichimura Japanese Garden, Ikebana International, and several other non-profit organizations in Miami-Dade County. She wants to make a difference by bringing diverse perspectives and new ideas. Community service runs in her family, her mother served on the City Commission for 12 years near Nagoya, Japan.

Josephine Shih Gordy
Josephine Shih Gordy, Third Vice-Chairwoman, appointed by District 2 Commissioner.
Josephine was born in Shanghai, China of a Chinese father and an Irish-Australian mother. Her family immigrated to Hong Kong when she was an infant. Josephine is a dedicated community advocate and volunteer. For close to 30 years, she has worked tirelessly with various local and national Asian American and Pacific Islander community organizations to promote active volunteerism in community welfare, elder welfare, civic engagement, immigration, and policy-decision awareness. Josephine also serves on the boards of: Asian American Federation of Florida, South Region; Asian Caribbean Exchange – ACE Talk, a weekly radio program; Florida Asian Services; and OCA South Florida Chapter.

 

Sharon Fine
Sharon Fine, Immediate Past Chairwoman, appointed by District 4 Commissioner.
She is a seasoned wealth management professional, with 20 plus year experience in the industry, currently a senior vice president at Northern Trust Bank. She earned her undergraduate and postgraduate degree from FIU, a Panther devotee. Sharon is passionate about serving the community at large and is always seeking for opportunities to give back.
