Chairman Gilbert earmarks $1 million dollars to fund District 1 Septic to Sewer Conversion Program with kickoff groundbreaking

MIAMI-DADE – Chairman Oliver G. Gilbert, III is taking action to address Miami-Dade County’s critical septic systems with a $1 million dollar contribution and groundbreaking to kickstart the District 1 Septic to Sewer Conversion Program, in partnership with Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD), on Thursday, Sept. 14 at 1 p.m. at Ives Estates Tennis, 1475 Ives Dairy Rd., Miami, FL 33179.

Chairman Gilbert and WASD will fund connections to the County’s centralized sanitary sewer system for over 60 homeowners whose septic systems are currently at risk of failing due to age, threats of contamination caused by flooding, and increasing sea-level rise. If not for this monetary contribution, it would cost homeowners approximately $10-$15,000 to connect their private property to the County’s sewer infrastructure.

A variety of other sources are being explored to fund the future phases of the program and lessen the financial impact on homeowners.
