Commissioner Eileen Higgins hosts ‘Super Tax Saturday’ in Little Havana
MIAMI-DADE – Miami-Dade County Commissioner Eileen Higgins, District 5, in partnership with Branches and Miami Tax Pros, will host ‘Super Tax Saturday,’ a free income tax prep event for Miami-Dade County residents on Saturday, March 19, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hispanic Branch Library, 1398 SW 1st St., Miami, FL 33135. Attendees will be able to file their taxes with an IRS-certified tax preparer from Miami Tax Pros and learn more about how they can claim expanded benefits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, the Child Tax Credit, and the Recovery Rebate Credit. By appointment only. Commissioner Higgins will be joined by residents and affected local families for a media availability to be held at 11 a.m.
“The reality is many of our low-income families fear filing taxes, and haven’t for years,” said Commissioner Higgins. “But now more than ever, there’s important changes that allow families to receive more money than ever before. We want to make sure that our community is informed of all expanded benefits they can take advantage of.”
Only for the 2021 tax year, more childless workers and couples could qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit, because the maximum credit was nearly tripled for taxpayers and for the first time was made available to both younger workers (ages 19 to 24) and senior citizens (65+).
The American Rescue Plan increased the amount of the Child Tax Credit (CTC) to make it as much as $3,000 per child for dependents ages 6 - 17, and $3,600 for dependents ages 5 and under. To get the CTC, eligible families must file a return, even if they received monthly payments.
The IRS has issued all first, second and third rounds of Economic Impact Payments. People who are missing a stimulus payment or got less than the full amount may be eligible to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2020 or 2021 federal tax return.
Residents may be eligible to get their taxes prepared for free, if one or more of the following are true: Speak limited or no English, have a disability, aged 60 or older, or have an annual income of less than $55,000.
