Commissioner Regalado sponsors legislation for busway naming to honor late former County Manager Merrett Stierheim

MIAMI-DADE – Commissioner Raquel Regalado sponsored legislation to honor the late former County Manager Merrett Stierheim with a street naming, which will be voted on at the Board of County Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, July 16, at the Stephen P. Clark Center. Commissioner Regalado is proposing that a portion of the South Dade Transit Way between the Dadeland South Metrorail Station and Southwest 112th Street be named as “The Merrett R. Stierheim Busway.”

Stierheim began his long and illustrious career as a public servant more than six decades ago. He served as the county manager of Miami-Dade County from 1976 to 1986 and again from 1998 to 2001. During his tenure as county manager, he successfully supervised a $5 billion Countywide infrastructure expansion, including the construction of Miami Metro Zoo (now known as Zoo Miami), the downtown library and cultural complex, Government Center (also known as the Stephen P. Clark Center), several regional parks, libraries, water, sewer, and solid waste facilities, and the County’s mass transit system – Metrorail and Metromover. He also served as a superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, former city manager of the City of Miami, and president and CEO of the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Stierheim was also an active member in the community, as he served on the board of directors of more than 30 local, state, and national organizations, including Barnett Bank, SunBank, Travel Industry of America (TIA), International Association of Convention & Visitors Bureaus (IACVB), United States National Tourism Organization (NTO 10) and the United Way of Miami-Dade County.

Stierheim passed away on July 7, 2024, at 90 years old.
