Commissioner McGhee’s “Save Charlie Act” to finally reach No Kill goal at the County’s animal shelter

MIAMI – The Miami-Dade County Commission on Dec. 15 approved legislation sponsored by Commissioner Kionne L. McGhee to finally reach the County’s “No Kill” goal for its animal shelter. Known as the “Save Charlie Act,” the legislation will end all euthanizations at the shelter except in cases in which an animal has proven to be dangerous with a poor prognosis for rehabilitation or irremediably suffers from a condition causing physical pain or suffering even with comprehensive veterinary care, and it will ensure that the County protect and care for all animals impounded at County-operated shelters during the period of their impoundment.

In 2013, the County adopted the “No Kill” goal as part of a strategic action plan that has dramatically reduced euthanizations at its animal shelter through a combination of pet adoption events, low-cost spaying and neutering clinics, partnerships with animal-rescue organizations, and high-quality veterinary care to animals in the shelter.

“Seven years have passed since the No Kill goal was established, and while great progress has been made since then, the time has come to fully achieve it, and this will take us to the next level to make us officially a No Kill shelter community,” Commissioner McGhee said.
