Schools from neighboring Commission districts to vie for 2nd annual "Commissioners Cup"


(MIAMI-DADE COUNTY) – Mater Academy and Westland Hialeah High will compete for the second annual Commissioners Cup between the two schools when their football teams meet on the field this week.

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz, who represents District 12 where Mater Academy is located, and Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr. of District 13, which includes Westland Hialeah High, are sponsoring the game to celebrate the two schools’ friendly rivalry. In addition to awarding the new Commissioners Cup trophy to the winning team, each Commissioner will donate $1,000 to their respective school’s athletic department.

The game will take place on Friday, Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m. at Traz Powell Stadium, 11380 NW 27th Avenue. Both Commissioners will participate in the coin toss to start the game.

Commissioner Diaz is looking forward to another win by defending champions the Mater Academy Lions.

“Mater Academy is unstoppable and will claim another big victory in this game. Go Lions!” Commissioner Diaz said.

Commissioner Bovo said he’s optimistic that Westland Hialeah Wildcats will seize the victory this time.

“I believe Westland’s team is ready to take on the Lions and win. Go Wildcats!” Commissioner Bovo said.
