Chairman Diaz invites elected officials to visit Covanta Plant in West Palm Beach
MIAMI-DADE – As stated at the Chairman’s Council of Policy meeting on April 13, 2022, Miami-Dade County Chairman Jose “Pepe” Diaz is inviting members of the media and local elected officials to visit the Covanta Plant in West Palm Beach on Wednesday, April 20, at 11:30 a.m. This is in response to Chairman Diaz’s resolution to develop and issue a solicitation to prepare a new waste to energy (“WTE”) plant to replace the County’s existing Resources Recovery Facility (“RRF”), located in Doral.
The visit will showcase the Covanta Palm Beach plant’s state-of-the-art technology, which has significantly better operational efficiencies with higher outputs of energy, captured recyclables, and a lower emissions profile. It also virtually eliminates odors outside of the facility.
WTE facilities are recognized as a net reducer of greenhouse gas and a key factor in reducing methane emissions, compared to landfilling and landfills. Studies have shown that U.S. counties and municipalities with WTE plants have better recycling rates than their non-WTE counterparts.
