(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department's (MDFR) Florida Task Force 1 Urban Search and Rescue Team (FLTF-1 US&R) will be conducting a demonstration on the challenges posed by building collapses following an earthquake or man-made disaster Tuesday, May 5, 2015, at the U.S.&R Training Facility located at 7900 SW 107 AVE in Kendall, FL. MDFR's US&R team is familiar with these types of disasters with past deployments to the Mexico City earthquake in 1985, the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, three earthquakes in 1999, Turkey, Taiwan and Colombia, the World Trade Center collapse in 2001, and most recently the collapse of the Miami-Dade College parking garage in 2012. In January 2010, FLTF-1 assisted in one of the most successful missions in the history of the National Urban Search and Rescue Response System, rescuing 11 survivors from the rubble in Port-au-Prince, Haiti in the wake of that nations devastating earthquake.
