(MIAMI, Nov. 11, 2022) – Members of Florida Task Force One (FL-TF1), Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s (MDFR) Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) Team, will host a Wilderness Training Workshop with the Girl Scouts on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2022 at 9 a.m., at Oleta River State Park.
Twenty (20) Girl Scouts from Miami Beach and North and South Dade will get a chance to move outside of their comfort zones during the 4-hour workshop focused on Survival Techniques and First Aid in Wilderness Training.
The outdoors has become a priority for the Girl Scouts USA organization and integral to its mission, always striving to make the adventure and journey meaningful, challenging, enjoyable, educational, and safe. While embedded with MDFR’s US&R FL-TF1 at the Oleta River State Park’s primitive wilderness area, the Girl Scouts will be exposed to a range of new and challenging outdoor experiences, which will help them strengthen their survival and outdoor leadership skills, enabling them to engage responsibly with nature throughout their lives.
At the end of the skill-building Wilderness Training Workshop, the Girl Scouts will earn some revered badges, including one for “Survival Camper and First Aid,” from this first-time instruction and practical experiences taught by the team members of FL-TF1, who were last deployed to assist in search and rescue efforts following Hurricane Ian on the southwest coast of Florida.
