How does Miami-Dade Fire Rescue rank nationally?

We have the busiest ladder truck in North America

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) was ranked the fourth largest fire department in North America, with 2,582 personnel, according to the 2010 National Run Survey published in the June, July and August 2011 issues of Firehouse Magazine.  MDFR’s Aerial 2, stationed in Liberty City, holds the distinction of taking the lead as the busiest aerial-ladder-truck in North America for the second consecutive year.  This ranking is a result of responding to 5,277 calls last year, 781 responses more than the second place aerial from Washington, DC and 800 calls more than the third-ranked aerial in New York City.  Aerial 2 was also listed as the 40th busiest non-transport unit, responding to 2,613 calls.

Firehouse Magazine, a leading publication in the fire-rescue industry, has compiled data for the past 30 years based on information provided by departments in the US and Canada.  Nearly 240 career fire departments participated in the published 2010 run survey.  MDFR was also ranked in the following categories:

  • Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, which serves a population 1.9 million people, responded to 236,206 emergency calls in 2010, making it the sixth busiest fire department in North America.
  • Sweetwater’s Station 29 responded to 15,844 calls making it the fifth busiest firehouse in North America.
  • Engine 7 was listed as the ninth busiest fire engine, with a total of 4,923 calls for the year.
  • Rescue 2 ranked No.12 in the busiest rescue/ambulance category, with 5,385 calls.
  • HazMat 17 was the fourth busiest hazardous materials unit in North America, with 1,178 calls.
  • In addition, Battalion 4 ranked as the twelfth busiest battalion chief for 2010, with 2,473 calls.

"I am extremely proud of our firefighters for making us one of the best fire-rescue departments in North America." said Interim Fire Chief Karls Paul-Noel.  "Our department's high rankings demonstrate that we are committed to delivering the highest level of service possible to our community."
