Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez and Ironhack host coding class for county staff and media

(MIAMI, April 24, 2015) – On Tuesday, April 28, 2015, Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez will welcome Miami-based Coding Bootcamp Ironhack to County Hall to provide members of his staff and invited members of the media with a 60-minute coding class.  In the run up to the upcoming eMerge Americas Conference, the “Mayor’s Coding Bootcamp” highlights his commitment to making Miami a global tech hub.  Ironhack, which has partnered with the eMerge Americas Conference to lead its upcoming Hackathon, is recognized as one of the best coding bootcamps in the world by Switchup.org and is Miami’s leading provider of intensive programming courses for developers and entrepreneurs.

The Coding Bootcamp is providing the Mayor’s team and media representatives firsthand knowledge of what goes into making a programmer and how exposing new programmers to the latest digital languages can be a catalyst in transforming our local economy into a global tech hub brimming with digital firms.  Participants will receive a briefing on the role of coding programs in developing Miami’s growing tech ecosystem, the national and international job markets for programmers and a look into the intensive curriculums that launch coding careers in only eight weeks.

“Miami-Dade County’s technology and innovation sector is no longer a well-kept secret.  Our world-class community has over 1,500 companies operating here that support over 8,300 jobs,” said Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez.  “This coding bootcamp will help us better understand what programmers do and how we can inspire our community’s young people to consider careers in this thriving field.”

“We don’t want to tell people how we can help them become programmers, I think it’s more effective if we show them,” said Ariel Quinones, co-Founder of Ironhack.  “I believe that in just 60 minutes, we can demonstrate how our courses can be transformational in the lives of our students and our community.”

Turning this vision into a reality will require that hundreds, if not thousands, of new programmers be trained every year in the latest coding languages.  It is in these front lines that a truly sustainable tech industry will emerge, thrive and grow.

The Intro to JavaScript and Data Visualization with D3.js will introduce participants to the programming language that is taking the world by storm.  The JavaScript ecosystem and the demand for JavaScript developers are growing exponentially.  In this beginner-friendly workshop participants will learn some basic JavaScript that can be used in conjunction with the D3.js library to make cool data visualizations.

About Ironhack

Ironhack is a coding school that was founded to change the way we learn about technology.  We offer immersive, accelerated learning experiences to super-motivated students who want to change career directions or turbocharge their current professional trajectory.  We believe that the traditional education system has been using the same methods since the Industrial Revolution and that’s why we’re so excited about experimenting with new models of education.  We’re big fans of the intersection of online and offline instruction.  We also think that we need more alternatives focused on developing practical, real-world skills.  We’re located in Miami, Madrid and Barcelona.  We started operations in the fall of 2013, but we’re really just getting started.  Come join us and help us build something special.
