(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- On Saturday, February 9, Crandon Park will be the site where 17 of the finest men’s race walkers from across the country will compete for the opportunity to go to the Beijing Olympics this summer. To qualify for the Olympics, the men will need to complete the 30-mile course in less than four hours.
The closed course was chosen by the United States Olympic Committee and the USA Track and Field Committee for its beauty, amenities, safety and speed. With zero elevation, this course was developed to qualify as many USA athletes as possible by making the course fast for athletes to finish in the Olympic time standard.
The race begins at 7:25 a.m. and will run until approximately 2 p.m. The course entrance is at the South Beach entrance to Crandon Park. There will be bleachers at the entrance to the race area and spectators are encouraged to attend. However, gates at the Crandon Park South Beach entrance will close by 6:55 a.m. sharp in order to clear the race track, and will remain closed during the duration of the race. The race area will also be closed to bikers, runners, joggers, and walkers during the time of the race, however the beach will remain open to patrons.
