"Unveiling" is a juried group show, highlighting historical and contemporary techniques in painting, sculpture and mixed media. Nine artists, Roberto Weiss, Ada Balcacer, Carlos Regalado, Lidia Godoi, Rey Carulla, Rosana Tossi, Mari Sanchez, Mildrey Guillot, and Armando Martinez, primarily from Latin American backgrounds or influenced by Latin American art, will be featured as part of this group show on exhibit at the Deering Estate through November 18, 2010. Open Daily: 10:00 am - 4:00 pm; Exhibit is free with Estate admission.
Latin American art is the combined artistic expressions of South America, Central America, the Caribbean, and Mexico, as well as Latin Americans from other regions. The art has roots in many different indigenous cultures that inhabited the Americas before the European colonization in the 16th century. The indigenous cultures each developed sophisticated artistic disciplines, highly influenced by religious and spiritual concerns, and their work is collectively known as Pre-Columbian art. The blending of Native American, African and European cultures has resulted in a unique Mestizo tradition.
