On Monday, December 5, 2022, you were searching for a carjacked vehicle in the Northwest District. You spotted the stolen and began to follow it, while requesting assistance from other members of RID. The car entered the parking lot of a shopping center, the driver slowed down, and then suddenly fired three times at your vehicle. A bullet struck you in the face just below your left eye. Despite being seriously injured, you requested emergency backup, described what was unfolding, and gave a description of the suspect. You assessed your own injuries and self-rendered emergency aid. Members of RID and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived on scene and started treating you. Based on the information you provided, RID was able to capture the suspect and recover the stolen vehicle. The suspect was charged with premeditated attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer.
On Tuesday, May 30, 2023, you and your fellow aircraft technicians were performing a routine 100-hour maintenance inspection of a helicopter. You completed your assigned tasks, as specified by the aircraft’s maintenance manual, but you took the opportunity to perform additional inspections on parts of the aircraft that were not required by the maintenance inspection. You examined the tail rotor control system, a segment that is not easily accessible, and requires specialized lights and mirrors to assess. During your examination, you discovered a loose nut on the bolt that connects the anti-torque pedals to the tail rotor control rods. You made the appropriate repairs and wired the nut to prevent it from coming undone. Had that occurred in flight, the pilot would have encountered a loss of tail rotor control that could have led to a crash.
