The Miami-Dade Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred inside a mall located within the City of Coral Gables, that resulted in one dead and two critically wounded. At approximately 12:55 p.m., shots were heard inside the mall coming from the second floor. A City of Coral Gables police officer was on the property and immediately responded to the fitness center and discovered three people suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The City of Miami Police Department, which is a neighboring city, immediately provided additional assistance to secure the area. Mall personnel provided patrons with instructions to seek shelter for their safety. Coral Gables Fire Rescue responded to the scene and pronounced one the three individuals deceased on the scene. The other two victims were airlifted to JMH Ryder Trauma Center, where they were listed in critical condition.
According to investigators, the preliminary investigation reveals that this shooting involves a dispute between an ex-employee and fitness center staff. The investigation also reveals that both victims were targeted and that this was not an act of random violence.
UPDATE #1: Further investigation has revealed that the subject, Abeku Wilson, was terminated from his employment on Saturday, April 8, 2017 due to work place violence and was escorted off the premises. He then returned to the fitness center armed with a hand gun and shot the general manager, Janine Ackerman, multiple times. He also shot Marios Hortis, employee, multiple times and then turned the gun on himself. Wilson was pronounced deceased on the scene and both victims were airlifted to JHM Ryder Trauma Center. Ms. Ackerman later succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. Mr. Hortis underwent surgery and is listed in stable condition.
UPDATE #2: Investigators have confirmed that Mr. Hortis has succumbed to his injuries.
