Miami-Dade County celebrates Community Action Month
The Miami-Dade County Community Action and Human Services Department is one of over 1000 community action agencies across the country working every day to positively transform the lives of low-income individuals; creating opportunities to make families thrive and communities stronger. CAHSD is the designated Community Action Agency (CAA) for Miami-Dade County and has a history of providing critical programs and services to combat poverty. For over 50 years, since the inception of Community Action Agencies as part of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, the Department has helped low-income residents of Miami-Dade County alleviate barriers to achieve economic security.
“More than ever during this difficult past year, the work of our community action agencies has been critical in connecting residents with service and resources,” said Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “Miami-Dade County residents from infants to our older adults benefit from CAHSD services, including quality childcare and education via Head Start, food and nutrition services, energy assistance, in-home services for the elderly, domestic violence intervention and substance abuse treatment, to name a few.”
In commemoration of Community Action Month, CAHSD will host community outreach events May 24th through May 27th. The department’s 16 Community Advisory Committees will canvas respective communities to inform residents of available services. The four-day event will culminate with a Resource Fair at the Perrine Community Resource Center May 27th at 10:00a.m. Information and services will be offered. The community can take advantage of COVID vaccinations, food distribution, early education childcare enrollment, workforce development services for youth and young adults, vocational programs, utility bill assistance and more.
“As the darkest days of the pandemic are behind us, we look ahead with great optimism by taking the time to mark this 57th year anniversary of Community Action nationally, helping families and communities overcome obstacles to economic stability,” said CAHSD Interim Director Annika S. Holder.
Participating partners include: Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, Miami-Dade Public Library System, Share Your Heart, Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department, Walking One Stop (Wayne Rawlins), and Florida Memorial University.
