Update regarding the demolition of Champlain Towers South
Between 10 p.m. on Sunday, July 4, 2021 and 3 a.m. on Monday, July 5, the vacant Champlain Towers South (8777 Collins Ave.) structure that remains standing will be demolished.
The unified command team has set up a "Blast Zone" (shown on the map in red) and a "Shelter in Place" Zone (shown in yellow), to prevent residents and visitors from getting too close to the demolition site.
- The "Blast Zone" is considered the area of detonation – a 300-foot radius around the center of the demolition.
- Residents in the "Shelter in Place Zone" are urged to stay indoors from 7 p.m. until 2 hours after the demolition.
Residents are urged to keep in mind:
- Dust is an unpreventable byproduct of all types of demolition. As a precautionary measure, we recommend you ensure that all windows, doors and air intakes are closed, cover any other openings that might allow dust to enter your apartment, house or building, and turn your A/C on re-circulate.
- There may be noise and heavy dust in the area immediately surrounding the demolition site. Dust may also drift outside and downwind of the Blast Zone, depending on weather conditions. If you live in the "Shelter in Place" Zone (shown above in yellow) we urge you to stay indoors, especially if you suffer from respiratory conditions that would be aggravated by dust.
The tragic collapse of Champlain Towers South has deeply impacted Surfside and the entire Miami-Dade community. We are grateful for all your support and consideration in the aftermath of this tragedy.
