Partially treated wastewater overflow results in swimming advisory

(MIAMI, January 13, 2015) - A swimming advisory is in effect in the waters surrounding Oleta River State Park including waters in the park and its beach and the Haulover Intracoastal Waterways.

There was a temporary overflow of partially treated wastewater this morning due to a heavy rain event at the North District Wastewater Treatment Plant. As a result, approximately 1.2-1.6 million gallons of effluent was released into surrounding surface waters.

As a precautionary measure, a public advisory is in effect to refrain from swimming and recreational activities within the following boundaries: Sunny Isles Blvd (north), south to Oleta River State Park Beach area from the eastern boundary of the Intracoastal Waterway west to Biscayne Blvd.

The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County and the Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources are testing the affected waters and the advisory remains in effect until test results are clear.
