Dear Residents,
Thank you for subscribing to the District 1 e-Newsletter. I want to provide you useful information and keep you up to date on what's happening in our district.
In honor of Black History Month, we will be hosting the 6th Annual Black Heritage Festival on Saturday, February 23, from noon to 4 p.m. at Miami Carol City Park, located at 3201 NW 185th Street, Miami Gardens, FL 33056. Join Commissioner Jordan and City of Miami Gardens Mayor Oliver Gilbert for this free event, featuring music, culture, crafts, family-friendly activities, and more. There will be mobile units on site providing information and services such as the Miami-Dade Community Action and Human Services Agency and the Miami-Dade Public Library System.
The festival will also feature African fashions, dancers, face painting, rock climbing, vendors, and food trucks. Attendees will enjoy performances by Miami Norland Middle School’s Dynasty Step Team, the Junkanoos, Zipporah Live, the Viking Freedom Writers and more. Be sure to mark your calendars!

Seven employees recognized for innovative ideas

At the Board of County Commissioners meeting on September 5, Commissioner Jordan recognized seven innovative employees who received awards as part of the Employee Ideas/Suggestion Program. The honorees who saved the county more than $16,000 were Mayte Salgado, of the RER Department, Lisset Guasch of the RER Department, Sandra Michaud of the Solid Waste Department, Manuel Infante of the Water and Sewer Department, Marilu Castillo and Kenia Lopez of the Water and Sewer Department, and Alexander Lora of the Water and Sewer Department.

Amazon donates $25K of school supplies in Opa-locka

Amazon surprised teachers and students at Dr. Robert B. Ingram Elementary School in Opa-locka with $25,000 worth of new school supplies on September 14. Commissioner Jordan worked closely with the Carrie Meek Foundation and its joint venture partner Foundry to help bring a new, state-of-the-art Amazon distribution center to District 1, which is now open.

Hispanic Heritage Celebration celebrates diversity

Performers dressed in traditional folkloric costumes paid homage to Panama, Colombia, and Venezuela at Miami-Dade County Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan’s 12th annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration on Sept. 15 at Country Village Park.

Chef Creole at MIA opens

Commissioner Jordan attended the grand opening of Chef Creole restaurant at Miami International Airport on September 19. She sponsored legislation that spearheaded the airport negotiations.

Groundbreaking ceremony for Bombardier service center

Commissioner Jordan attended the Bombardier groundbreaking ceremony on October 3 at Miami-Opa locka Executive Airport. This new $90 million service center will serve as an important conduit in the development of a larger aerospace hub at the airport and create an “aviation center” for the region.

Tour of Northeast and Central Bus Facilities

On October 11, Commissioner Jordan took a guided tour of the Northeast and Central Bus Facilities, which was led by the Transport Workers Union leadership of Local 291, as well as department managers. The tour provided insight on current bus projects, facility needs, and shared ideas to enhance service for County residents.

Kicking off early voting at new voting site

Commissioner Jordan cast her ballot alongside her colleagues and students from Miami Dade College to kick off early voting in Miami-Dade County at a new voting site on campus on October 22.

Miami-Opa locka Executive Airport recognized

Commissioner Jordan presented a proclamation to Miami-Opa locka Executive Airport for being named the state of Florida’s General Aviation Airport of the Year at the Board of County Commissioners meeting on October 23.

Pinnacle Housing Group recognized for Brickell View Terrace

Commissioner Jordan presented a congratulatory certificate to partners at Pinnacle Housing Group: David Deutch, Mitchell M. Friedman, Louis Wolfson III, and Michael D. Wohl. Pinnacle Housing Group is a Miami-Dade County-based, full-service real estate development company committed to solving the critical need for affordable housing and workforce housing in the Southeastern United States’ urban centers, suburban areas and rural communities.

Jordan gives away over 700 turkeys

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan hosted her 14th annual turkey giveaway at Landmark in Northwest Miami-Dade County on November 19. Commissioner Jordan, sponsors, and volunteers handed out more than 700 turkeys to those in need, including churches, schools, and social organizations that serve the community.
