Dynamic trio drives Miami-Dade Transit forward
Hitting one million miles behind the wheel is an incredible achievement. To put it in perspective, that’s the equivalent of driving around the earth 40 times or making two round trips to the moon.
“To me it makes the earth feel a little small,” Billy Richardson said as he lets out a hearty laugh while mulling over the impressive feat he has accomplished after a nearly 33-year career. “The time just kind of flies by.
Billy Richardson, Charles Bell and Rickey Wiggins have each reached this impressive milestone with Miami-Dade Transit. Collectively, they have driven an astonishing three million miles. That’s enough to circle the globe 120 times.
“My dad drove too,” Bell, who is now on his 32nd year on the job, said. “So, it’s in the blood.”
Bell’s father worked for the Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) for 40 years. He says his father loved the job as much as he does. When asked if he’ll continue the legacy, Bell said that while his father did 40 years, he doesn't think he's going to.
Wiggins has a similar story when it comes to his inspiration and love for being on the road.
“My dad used to drive for Greyhound," he said. "I used to ride with him."
In fact, Wiggins was so drawn to driving he began at the tender age of eight.
“I would borrow the family truck to go to the store," he added.
Wiggins has been driving for DTPW for 35 years and he credits his love for the outdoors and his father’s guidance as driving forces behind his long career.
“My dad was excellent at his job," said Wiggins. "I would watch him and learn from how he treats people."
The unwavering dedication and hard work shown by Richardson, Bell and Wiggins in keeping our community moving safely and reliably every day is inspiring. This milestone represents countless hours of service and commitment to ensuring residents and visitors reach their destinations smoothly.
Our County family is immensely proud of their achievements and grateful for their exceptional contributions. Here’s to wishing them many more miles on the road.
Thank you Billy Richardson, Charles Bell and Rickey Wiggins for driving Miami-Dade County forward at DTPW.
