Putting the welcome in the wagon

Most County employees get to meet Edwin Morales when he welcomes them to the New Hire Center in the Human Resources Department. Together with his excellent team, Morales processes new hires, taking their fingerprints and ID photos, and securing all required documentation.

“I’m a people person,” Morales explained. “It is very rewarding to have a role with bringing employees onboard and helping them navigate through some of their initial steps.”

“We work closely with department personnel teams across the County to make the experience a good one. The collaboration ensures employees have a great start.”

Morales has been the point of contact at the New Hire Center for more than 37 years. His customer service style includes a wonderful sense of humor and a great smile that puts everyone at ease. He connects employees with important resources from day one.

“I remember my first day in the County,” Morales says. “It was June 26, 1987. I went home and told my mom and dad. They were so happy for me.”

“I want every employee to remember their first day with the County too.  Miami-Dade County is a great place to work and build a career. That’s why I encourage our new hires to stay open to the challenges ahead and serve our residents with their best efforts.”

“We have to stay positive always,” he added. “I’m still learning and adapting. There are always new tools and new regulations.”

“Most recently, I have been out at community Job Fairs. Helping to bring a new generation to join the County family. It’s amazing to be able to help people complete a job application and learn how the system works. This is actually pre-new hire.”

Reflecting on his years of service, and the many wonderful people he meets on the job, he talked about the importance of taking time to celebrate and what it means to him to be acknowledged by his coworkers and peers.

“I will never forget the feeling of seeing so many at my 30-year service award presentation. Friends and colleagues represented the incredible relationships I was able to build in service and with my genuine interest in others. It was a little humbling, but definitely significant.”

When he is not at work, Morales enjoys spending time with his family and friends. Whether sharing a meal, hanging out at home, or traveling to his native Peru, he enjoys people and community.
