Making a meaningful difference

Since joining the Miami-Dade Public Library System (Library) in 2012, Marlon Moore has been living his dream of creating opportunities that connect our residents with the incredible resources available at their local library. As a community engagement coordinator, he focuses on engaging people of all ages with the latest technology and works to create several other award-winning programs.

Moore was recently honored with a Library Journal 2024 Movers & Shakers Award in the Innovators category. The award recognizes his work in creating opportunities to actively engage residents of all ages with emerging technology through the Library’s Technobus (mobile computer lab) and for his role in helping develop the Small Business Expo, a series of one-day conferences at the Library presented in partnership with the Miami-Dade County Office of Innovation and Economic Development. The program aligns with the Mayor’s STRIVE305 Initiative, aimed at supporting small businesses and entrepreneurs by making resources and information easily accessible to help them thrive.

“More than 800 entrepreneurs have attended the programs,” Moore explains. “We have an average of 160 business owners at each event. The series supports the Mayor’s vision that entrepreneurship should be available to everyone in our County.”

Another program that Moore is passionate about is the Fearless Mindful Youth Initiative, which helps at-risk teenagers develop life skills, learn about careers and create art. In 2022, the initiative was recognized with a National Association of Counties Achievement Award.

“The Library has collaborated with other County departments to help address the shared community issues of juvenile crime, delinquent behavior and childhood trauma. During FMYI programs, participating teens attended workshops and learned to create art and multimedia. They also learned to improve their communication, college and career mindset, critical thinking skills, and improve their overall well-being,” Moore explains.

Moore has also helped develop and launch several innovative Library services, including the Technobus, YOUmedia Miami, YOUmake Miami Makerspaces, and the Coworking Center.

“Each year, the Technobus serves hundreds of seniors throughout the County, providing training for residents on topics such as how to use their mobile devices, social media and email,” Moore said. “People of all ages are also excited to use the vehicle’s equipment, including Wi-Fi, cameras, music equipment, drones, and multimedia technology to search for jobs and create resumes.”

When not at work, Moore finds balance in exploring quiet or exotic natural places, especially mountains, lakes, rivers, the ocean, and parks. “I enjoy reading, mountain biking, and hiking. I also love to stay well-informed on the latest technology,” Moore said.

“I thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to serve the public each day. It is such a pleasure to work alongside so many talented and dedicated people in the Library and Miami-Dade County government,” he added. “I am grateful for the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our community members and look forward to continuing this rewarding work.
