Crafting winning solutions for our community

Eric Streett sandboarding at Huacachina, Peru.

Eric Streett is a code enforcement officer with the Environmental Resource Management Division of the Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources (RER). He has dedicated the last 27 years working with residents to ensure compliance with important regulations that protect our ground water, air quality and green areas.

Resident Kimarie Stratos wrote to share her experience with our Mayor. “The Water and Sewer Department informed me and my neighbors that we had to connect to sewer lines. The cost was up to $18,000 per house. With rising taxes and insurance, it meant that many of us would need to sell our homes or drastically raise rents.”

“Enter Mr. Streett. Given the nature of his position, I expected him to be a rigid enforcer. Instead, he listened, provided helpful suggestions and allowed us time to act.”

“While Mr. Streett has made clear we must act to the satisfaction of the County, he has done so in a very positive way. Saying no is easy. Finding a solution is hard and time consuming—it means more work.  That’s the route Mr. Streett chose and we, the citizens of Miami-Dade County are the better for it,” Stratos added.

“Mr. Streett’s professionalism, understanding of people and service-orientation are among the best I have encountered in the County,” she concluded. She also mentioned Streett’s supervisor and staff with Commissioner Regalado’s office, now working to help with this project.

“Through compliance, we are working to make the County better every day,” Streett says. “Whatever the circumstances, I know my actions help make Miami-Dade County a great place to live for future generations.”

“When I came to work at the County, I was fortunate for the mentorship of John Farina. He inspired us to get violations corrected as a priority. Over the years, many other leaders have kept that focus and we have been able to partner and collaborate throughout the community.”

“The job is never boring and requires constant development of new skills. Sometimes it is the investigative requirements that create the challenge, other times, the challenge is working with the individuals. Each case requires everything you have learned and often something new,” Streett says.

“There is also an important educational component to the job,” he adds. “People who are not in compliance, may just not know any better and you have to help them learn how their actions have consequences. Some of which, affect the environment and the safety of other residents.”

“I was glad to learn Ms. Stratos understood that we had to work together to create a solution.” Street added. “Our goal is to make our community the best it can be and solve problems with good information and the best available option. Working closely with other County groups is also essential.”

A father to two young children, 11 and 6, Streett says his family offers the perfect balance to his job responsibilities. He and his wife stay busy with their active kids and home life. He says the weekends include gardening and handyman chores, also known as a “honey-do list.”

On and off the job, Streett is all about working together to craft winning solutions.
