Giving back to our community

Stefanie Sass

Stefanie Sass is the chief of staff to Chief Operations Officer Jimmy Morales in the Mayor’s Office.

Originally from Maryland, Sass relocated to South Florida in 2012 after graduating from Indiana University.

“I was a field organizer for the Obama campaign right out of college. For ten years, I served as a fundraiser and political strategist for local members of Congress, senators and presidential candidates,” Sass said.

Most recently, Sass was with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in Washington D.C. serving as director of congressional affairs. On weekdays she worked at NASA headquarters. On weekends, she returned to North Miami Beach to be with her husband. Although it was a great opportunity, she always knew she would end up back home in South Florida.

“A presidential appointment, the job with NASA was a unique opportunity where I led our team to educate Congress and other elected officials regarding the agency’s key mission and legislation,” Sass said. “It’s an incredible time to work in space as we prepare to return to the moon, to Mars and beyond.”

She believes the County allows her the chance to contribute and give back to the community in South Florida. "There will be long range projects, but also many chances to be part of projects where immediate results can lead to positive change.”

“Everyone here has been so welcoming and supportive,” Sass added. “I feel like I am in the right place with the best people. Working with Chief Morales and his extensive portfolio means working with Aviation, Parks, Port Miami, RER, WASD, Transit, DSWM and Elections.”

“All of these departments deliver vital community services and drive our economy. One of my primary goals in this role is to help Chief Morales support these departments and support the Mayor however I can.

“I’m very much looking forward to staying a member of the County family. During the past ten years, I have lived in different neighborhoods in Miami-Dade, from Coconut Grove, to South Beach, to North Bay Village. I feel really familiar with our community, its many different residents and their needs,” Sass said.

When not at work, Sass and her husband enjoy scuba diving. They exercise to keep fit and walk everywhere with their three Huskies: Zeus, Rhea and Ghost (Greek mythology references).

“I’m excited to be here and be able to give back to this community that has given me so much,” Sass concluded.
