The Water and Sewer Department thrives in excellence
The Water and Sewer Department (WASD) recognized several stellar employees and exceptional teams on Aug.13 with Pebble Program Awards.
“Our Program is designed to recognize contributions that advance our mission and vision," said Safety, Risk Management and Employee Development Division Chief LaKeisha G. Brown. "We highlight how each employee's actions, like a pebble creating ripples, play a vital role in our pursuit of excellence. Together, we set new standards, inspire innovation and celebrate the achievements that make WASD a model utility.”
Plant Electrical Supervisor Edgar Martin was the quarter one winner. Following the Surfside Condo collapse, state and county building recertification standards were heightened. Infrared thermography inspections became a requirement and due to a shortage of qualified staff, some buildings were marked unsafe because of incomplete documentation. Martin stepped in to assist, outside of his regular duties. His diligent work successfully cleared building PS0522 from Regulatory and Economic Resources enforcement. He produced the department’s first report without a predefined format or template.
The Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition and Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant’s Field Unit received honorable mention for quarter one. Initially unrelated to their direct responsibilities, they undertook installation of new closed-circuit televison and access control systems. This multi-phase project covered essential areas and integrated with the information technology network. The unit's ability to adapt and contribute effectively to organizational needs were recognized. The recognized team members included Robert Hallo, Luis Jimenez, Yonel Llovet, Tulio Avendano, Paul Jagielski, Alfredo Arevalo, Carlos Morilla, Alexis Garayburu, Jose L. Oliva, Juan R. Martinez-Zardoya, Eduardo Ortiz, Angel Ramirez, Oscar Puente and Carlos E. Sosa.
For quarter two, the Security & Communication Divisions' Emergency Communications Section Support team received winner honors. Immediately after a severe no-name storm last year, the Mayor assigned WASD to work with the Emergency Communication Center, responding to damage reports from the 311 Call Center. The team rose to the challenge, managing crisis calls from storm impacted residents and completing emergency disaster relief surveys with dedication.
The Water Production & Maintenance Division's Top Ops Competition team received honorable mention for quarter two. Treatment Plant Operators Gabriel Grosso, Sheldon Casses and Andres Borondo competed in what is known as the college bowl of the water industry. They showcased their exceptional skills with pride, professionalism and contributed to our positive reputation in the industry. Team members included were Twyla Collier, Ulises Lopez, Chequndra Dukes, Maria Lopez, Takarra Woodson, Lysomar Encarnacion Viera, Jorge Cruz, Kenya Taylor, Shanterra Kerr, Dameka Howard, Maria Luna, Tequilla Hart, Alice Burkes, Keundra Lee, Ansonia Moore, Destiny Gaddist, A’Crysta McIntyre, Samora Polydore, Tyra Maycock, Kayla Blake-Baez, Edlyn Alcinor, Carla Drakes and Leticia King.
“We're committed to more than just delivering exceptional water and wastewater services," added Brown. "We're driving positive change and innovation. The Pebble Program, a key part of our WAVE 'Water a Vision for Excellence' strategic plan, celebrates the dedication and creativity of our employees who consistently go above and beyond.”
