Miami-Dade County Parks celebrates World Sea Turtle Day with a beach cleanup at Haulover Park
On Saturday, June 17, in honor of annual World Sea Turtle Day, a day set aside to highlight the importance of sea turtles and raising awareness about ways to protect them, the Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department’s Sea Turtle Conservation Program will host a beach cleanup at Haulover Park. The event provides the community with a great opportunity to show their love and support for the preservation and conservation of sea turtles nesting on Miami-Dade beaches.
Miami-Dade Parks’ Sea Turtle Conservation Program team identifies and protects sea turtle nests along the 17-mile county coastline that the Parks Department is responsible for maintaining. The program was established in 1980 as a crucial component of Miami-Dade Parks’ efforts to ensure sea turtle survival. Today, program staff survey beaches throughout the county for sea turtle activity, including nests and hatchlings, from Golden Beach at the northern county line, south to the Village of Key Biscayne. This stretch includes monitoring for seven oceanfront municipalities and two county beach parks, Crandon and Haulover Parks.
Miami-Dade Parks’ Sea Turtle Conservation work aligns with that of conservationists around the world to protect the endangered sea turtle, whose numbers are a globally recognized indicator of the health of our oceans. Zoo Miami, also a part of the Miami-Dade parks system, operates the first sea turtle hospital in the county to treat injured or sick sea turtles, nursing them back to health and returning them to their natural habitats.
The Miami-Dade County Sea Turtle Conservation Program invites everyone to be part of the sea turtle season, by adopting a nest, experiencing a sea turtle night release, or observing a daytime nest excavation this summer. For more information, visit the web page.
