Miami-Dade County Solid Waste Management contractor to conduct maintenance, cleaning of Resource Recovery Facility
Maintenance to include the facility’s Air Quality Control System
The Miami-Dade County Department of Solid Waste Management (DSWM) informs the public that its contractor, Covanta, is set to begin maintenance and cleaning of the Air Quality Control System at the County’s Resources Recovery Facility this week.
"This maintenance comes as part of a plan to clean up the site and preserve equipment that was unaffected by the February 2023 fire. While the administration has formally recommended to keep the plant closed, the cleaning is necessary to assist with any inspections or surveys the plant’s insurer may conduct. The maintenance project will include removing the baghouse fabric filters and any remaining residual ash, as well as sandblasting the baghouse modules."
In order to perform this work safely, any heat trapped in the baghouse modules as a result of the hot summer weather will be alleviated by use of an induced air fan. The fan will pull non-combustion air through the unit and baghouse up to the stack. Air quality monitoring will take place throughout the project to ensure compliance with federal air quality standards.
The maintenance project will be performed one unit at a time, during the day, 12 hours per day, for each of the facility’s four boilers. Work is expected to take five to seven days per boiler, and the project should be completed by October.
