Miami-Dade County implements RedSpeed Photo Enforcement System to further increase school zone safety
The Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) is proud to announce the launch of a new speed photo enforcement system throughout Miami-Dade County public school zones for the 2024/2025 school year. The program aims to build public awareness and increase safety in school zones, especially for children. The first installations have been activated at the following school zones:
- Goulds Elementary School - 23555 SW 112th Avenue, Miami, FL 33032
- Hammocks Middle School - 9889 Hammocks Boulevard, Miami, FL 33196
- Madie Ives K-8 Center - 20770 NE 14th Avenue, Miami, FL 33179
- Redland Middle School - 16001 SW 248 Street, Miami, FL 33031
- Devon Aire K-8 Center - 10501 SW 122 Avenue, Miami, FL 33186
- Highland Oaks Middle School - 2375 NE 203rd Street, Miami, FL 33180

- Charles R Drew K-8 Center - 1775 NW 60th Street, Miami, FL 33142
- Robert Russa Moton Elementary School - 18050 Homestead Avenue, Miami, FL 33157
“This initiative is essential for keeping our residents, especially our youngest, safe in and around schools,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “By enforcing speed limits near school zones, Miami-Dade County is taking proactive measures to protect our kids and encourage safe driving.”
Two hundred and six school zones have been identified, all in the unincorporated area of Miami-Dade. State law allows cities to implement the same program, and some cities have already begun this process. The first cameras became operational on Monday, November 4, 2024. During the first 30 days, drivers caught speeding 10 miles per hour above the speed limit or more will receive warnings. After 30 days, violators will receive a $100 citation.
“Creating safer school zones starts with addressing speed, which is one of the largest causes of injury and death in traffic collisions,” said Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners Vice Chairman Anthony Rodriguez. “I am proud to see that our County has launched this tool to help keep our school children safer. At the same time, I ask drivers to always be vigilant in and around school zones to help prevent serious accidents and save lives. Together, we can make our roadways safer for all.”
The implementation supports the County’s Vision Zero initiative, which aims to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries by 2040. The new enforcement system is expected to decrease accidents, enhance public health, and improve road safety by reducing speeding in school zones.
“Implementing this speed photo enforcement system is a key component of aligning with our Vision Zero strategy,” said Eulois Cleckley, Director and CEO of DTPW. “We are fully committed to making our roads safer for everyone, especially our children.”
