The Deering Estate welcomes their 2025 Artists in Residence
The Deering Estate is excited to announce the new cohort of the Artist-in-Residence (AIR) Program, continuing Charles Deering’s legacy of fostering artistic innovation and cultural exchange.
The AIR Program has long been a prestigious and competitive platform for visual, performing, and literary artists who are dedicated to developing their craft. This year’s residency marks an exciting new chapter, as we welcome artists from diverse disciplines to work side-by-side in the Carriage House and Power House studios. Through this collaborative model, artists will be encouraged to explore interdisciplinary approaches, share resources, and develop new work that speaks to the rich history and environment of the Deering Estate. This shift aligns with our mission to serve as an incubator for creativity and community engagement while nurturing the careers of emerging and mid-career artists.
The selection process for the 2025 Artist-in-Residence Program was conducted by a panel of distinguished jurors from diverse backgrounds in science and the arts: Dr. Amy Galpin, Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Museum of Art and Design at Miami Dade College; Houston Cypress, artist and founder of Love The Everglades Movement; and Ana Rojas, Conservation and Research Specialist at Deering Estate.
These esteemed jurors played an integral role in evaluating the highly competitive pool of applicants, ensuring that the selected artists represent both the highest level of artistic merit and a commitment to engaging with the public through innovative and dynamic programming.
We are thrilled to introduce the 2025 Artist-in-Residence recipients:
Visual Artists Dona Altemus, Andres Cabrera-Garcia, Andrea Clement, Giannina Dwin, Tony Fernandez, Jessica (Yesica) Gispert, Anna Goraczko, Charles Humes, Jr., Jeanne Jaffe, Karen Rifas, Enma Saiz, Lissette Schaeffler, Gretchen Scharnagl, Meg Wallace, Carolina Zuniga; Literary Artist Francess Archer Dunbar; and Movement Artist Nicole Pedraza.
These artists will participate in public programs, including lectures, workshops, and open studio events, offering the community opportunities to engage with their work throughout the residency year. Their residencies will culminate in exhibitions and performances that reflect their dynamic collaboration and interactions with the Estate's unique cultural and natural resources.
In addition, we are proud to highlight the ongoing contributions of the following artists, who lead public programming that reflects their unique artistic practices and contributions to cultural dialogue, providing year-round engagement for visitors of the Deering Estate.
The Artists-in-Residence, Programming Partners are:
- Susana Behar: Hispanic Heritage & Women's History Month Concerts

Artist-in-Residence Program
The Artist-in-Residence program currently welcomes professional Visual, Performing, and Literary Artists who are self-motivated and focused. The primary basis for selection of our artists is the strength and quality of the applicant’s work as well as a clear objective for the time of their residency. Both Studio Residencies and Non-Studio Project Residencies are available and are competitively selected through a jury process using leading professionals from our family of galleries, collaborative arts, and cultural organizations.
As evident from our Artist in Residence Alumni, the Deering Estate Artist in Residence Program has been a catalyst for artistic practice and recognition including additional residencies, national and local grants, gallery representation, collection acquisitions, and community engagement. As a cultural arts organization we are very proud of the role that our program has had in our artists’ careers, the positive measurable interactions with the public, and even in our growing cultural partnerships. We have had the privilege of presenting and collaborating with internationally acclaimed artists, composers, musicians, playwrights, authors, and performers.
