Mayor Daniella Levine Cava to be Grand Marshal at 48th annual MLK Day Parade in Liberty City
On Monday, January 20th, at the 48th annual MLK Day Parade, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava will serve as Grand Marshal for the very first time at the annual parade in Liberty City. Leroy Jones, the founder of Neighbors and Neighbors Association, Inc. (NANA) and a lifelong advocate for small businesses and underserved communities, will also serve as Grand Marshal.
“It’s a special honor to be recognized in Dr. Martin Luther King’s name and to be leading this historic parade in our county,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “I am proud to honor his fight to fulfill America’s promise of opportunity for all and his courageous defense of democracy and human rights. I strive to embody his commitment to always choose love for our community and our nation.”
This year’s theme, “Never Give Up on the Dream,” reflects Dr. King’s unwavering dedication to economic justice and poverty alleviation through nonviolent action, and advocates for taking nonviolent action toward achieving equality, justice, and change for all.
Beginning at 11 a.m., the 2.5-hour parade takes place along NW 54th Street on a route from NW 7th Avenue to NW 32nd Avenue that follows the sacred ground Dr. King once traveled during his frequent visits to Miami. The festivities continue until 6 p.m., at the Family Festival in Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Park with live music, dance and theatrical performances, a crafts marketplace, food vendors, and children's activities.
A contingency of Miami-Dade County employees will participate in this year's parade from the Miami-Dade Aviation Department, Department of Cultural Affairs, Internal Services Department, Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces; Water and Sewer Department, Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department, the Department of Solid Waste Management, the Department of Transportation and Public Works, and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
