5G Micro-Facilities Permitting

Fifth-generation wireless cellular technology, known as 5G, is designed to connect people, devices, machines and objects. It's intended to be faster and more reliable than previous generations, like 4G, with higher speeds, more consistent connections, and greater capacity.

Higher performance and improved efficiency through 5G empower new user experiences and connect new industries, which are essential for the economic growth of any large metropolitan area in the world. To provide 5G capabilities for end-users throughout a specific area, wireless cellular companies must upgrade their communications equipment, which is usually installed on poles at various distances.

Companies such as AT&T, Cellco (doing business as Verizon), Crown Castle, Mastec, and T-Mobile have been upgrading and installing 5G equipment in Miami-Dade County since 2017.

5G Permit Applications Oversight

Miami-Dade County does not have local authority to manage and regulate the location where small wireless facilities, also referred to as 5G equipment, may be installed. The County’s permitting authority for the installation of this equipment is preempted by State regulation, FL Senate Bill SB-1000, enacted in 2019.

Under the State statute, Miami-Dade County is only allowed to review each application for ADA sidewalk compliance, line of sight and clear zones.
