The Office of New Americans
The Office of New Americans (ONA) of Miami-Dade is a local County initiative designed to assist legal permanent residents (LPRs) in navigating the path to U.S. citizenship. The office provides a range of services aimed at helping immigrants through the naturalization process. These services include referrals to free or low-cost legal assistance, citizenship application workshops, and educational resources about the rights and responsibilities of U.S. citizens.
ONA also offers referrals to language support and civics classes to help applicants prepare for the U.S. naturalization test, as well as personalized guidance to ensure a smooth transition from permanent residency to full citizenship. With a commitment to fostering an inclusive community, the Office of New Americans serves as a vital resource for LPRs in Miami-Dade County seeking to fully integrate into American civic life.
Nearly half a million eligible legal permanent residents (LPRs) in Miami-Dade County stand to gain significantly by becoming U.S. citizens. By completing the naturalization process, these individuals would unlock a variety of benefits, including the right to vote in local, state, and federal elections, giving them a voice in shaping policies and decisions that directly impact their lives and communities. Citizenship also offers greater job opportunities, as many federal positions and certain private sector jobs require U.S. citizenship. Furthermore, U.S. citizens enjoy stronger legal protections, including the ability to sponsor family members for immigration benefits and greater security from deportation.
Citizenship also provides access to social benefits like federal healthcare programs, student financial aid, and other essential services. Beyond practical advantages, becoming a U.S. citizen fosters a deeper sense of belonging and integration into American society, allowing individuals to fully participate in the nation’s cultural, political, and economic life. For the nearly 500,000 LPRs in Miami-Dade, citizenship represents a pathway to greater opportunity, stability and inclusion in the community.

About Us
Created by Resolution R-595-15, the Office of New Americans of Miami-Dade (ONA) is a countywide initiative to assist immigrant residents to overcome any barriers on their path to full citizenship. In June 2015, through the leadership of then-Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava, then-Mayor Carlos Gimenez, Citi Community Development, the Board of County Commissioners and the Florida Immigrant Coalition, the County leveraged its resources to educate aspiring Americans and provide free and low-cost services as part of a national effort, Cities for Citizenship, the first county in the nation to join this effort.
