The summer clerk program provides a realistic view of what it is like to practice law in the County Attorney’s Office. The Office interviews first-year and second-year students, as well as third-year students who have accepted judicial clerkships. The Office traditionally interviews on campus at Yale, Harvard, University of Chicago, Northwestern, Columbia, NYU, Duke, University of Michigan, and University of Pennsylvania. The Office also reviews resumes from students who attend schools that we do not visit.
Summer clerks are encouraged to spend their entire summers with us, but are permitted to split their summers. Summer clerks receive projects from a variety of practice areas to expose them to the diversity of the Office’s work. Clerks may spend part of their summers at one or more of our two satellite offices, located at Miami International Airport and Jackson Memorial Hospital. If a summer clerk expresses interest in a particular practice area, every effort is made to accommodate that interest. All summer clerks are also encouraged to accompany Assistant County Attorneys to depositions, court appearances, trials, oral arguments, mediations, arbitrations, personnel hearings, client meetings, Board of County Commissioners meetings, advisory board meetings, and quasi-judicial board hearings.
Each summer clerk is provided with a mentor, who provides personal insight to the clerk, answering any questions and addressing any concerns that the clerk may have.
Social activities are organized throughout the summer, and include happy hour events, baseball games, and other outdoor activities. Additionally, the summer clerks tour various County facilities, including Vizcaya, Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami International Airport, and the Seaport. In addition, clerks have at their disposal one of the most culturally diverse and stimulating urban areas in the country. Whether the clerk’s outside interests lie in music, art, professional sports, or simply sun and sand, they are certain to be satisfied in Miami-Dade County.
Clerks receive contemporaneous evaluations from the attorneys for whom they work. At the end of the summer, clerks also participate in an exit interview with the County Attorney or the First Assistant County Attorney.
