The Appeals and Professional Development Section provides expert legal analysis and support to Assistant County Attorneys regarding all aspects of appellate advocacy and legal strategy in an array of cases-from routine litigation arising out of the governance of the County to complex appeals involving cutting-edge legal questions and important public policy issues. Our attorneys handle appeals to federal and state appellate courts, including the Miami-Dade County Circuit Court Appellate Division, the Florida District Courts of Appeal, the Florida Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court. We also handle appeals of decisions made by the Board of County Commissioners, and orders issued by quasi-judicial County Boards. Many of the lawyers in our office are former appellate clerks for judges across the country. While Assistant County Attorneys typically handle their own appeals, our team collaborates with them throughout the life of the case and can handle the appeal if appropriate. We are available to help identify potential appellate issues, to offer counsel on whether to take an appeal, to review and edit written briefs, to coordinate mock oral arguments, and to help craft amicus curiae briefs in cases implicating the County's interests, with the goal of providing the strongest possible advocacy on the County's behalf.
Our team also coordinates a variety of in-house training seminars on topics of significance to the Office, led by our own attorneys and industry experts. Our courses, all of which are submitted to the Florida Bar for continuing education credits, provide attorneys with a well-rounded knowledge base and practice-specific tools that contribute to their overall professional development. We also administer a mentoring program and organize an orientation for newly hired attorneys where the unique work performed at the County Attorney's Office is highlighted.
