About Albert A. Hernandez
For more than 25 years, Albert Hernandez has worked in the transportation-engineering field. In April 2005, Hernandez joined Miami-Dade Transit (MDT) as Assistant Director for Engineering, Planning and Development. In this role, Mr. Hernandez is responsible for overseeing MDT's Capital Improvement and Structural Inspection Program. Recently, he led the efforts in completing MDT's Metrorail AirportLink project which involved extending Metrorail from the Earlington Heights station to the Miami Intermodal Center (MIC). The project budget was over $500 million and was completed in 2012 under budget and on schedule. In addition, MDT is advancing several other transit projects, such as upgrades to several Metrorail and Metrobus maintenance and operation facilities, construction of new park and ride lots and aggressively pursuing public private partnerships through Transit Oriented Developments at several existing rail and bus stations.
Hernandez comes to MDT from a local consulting engineering company, where he served as Executive Vice President. In this role, he was responsible for the company's operations, finances, marketing and administration. He has ten years of experience with the Florida Department of Transportation (District Six), including design and project management. Hernandez also served as the Senior Project Manager for the project development of Fort Lauderdale International Airport's terminal-access roadway interchange project.
Hernandez received, with honors, a Master's degree in Business Administration from Florida International University, and graduated Cum Laude from the University of Miami with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He is registered as a professional engineer in Florida and New York. In March of 2007 he received the "Luis P. Saenz" Award (f/k/a the Cuban American Engineer of the Year Award) from the Cuban-American Association of Civil Engineers. Hernandez is a hard working, dedicated engineer with a personal philosophy for getting the job done. In addition to his busy work schedule, Hernandez finds time to do work in his community, especially through his church. He is a member of the Florida Institute of Consulting Engineers (FICE) and the Florida Engineering Society (FES). He desires to do more mentoring, especially with young students with an aptitude for math and science. He advocates educating people about the importance, challenges and rewards found in the field of engineering.
Hernandez was born in New York City; however, he has lived in Miami since 1969 and considers himself a Miamian. He is the proud son of Cuban parents. Hernandez receives continuous support from his wife and partner, Anebel. He is the joyous father of a 15-year old daughter and a 12-year old son.
